Bodegas Beronia is quintessentially Rioja. Its wines are defined by the region and the soils in which the vines are grown, and its name linked to the history of the land where the winery is found. In the 3rd Century B.C the area known as Rioja today was inhabited by a celtic tribe called the ‘Berones’. They inhabited the towns of Tricio, Varea and Leiva, marking the limits of the Berones region, today La Rioja. The founding ethos of Beronia is strongly allied to the origins of La Rioja.

Beronia was founded in 1973 by a group of businessmen, friends from the Basque country who would come to La Rioja on holiday. The friends had a great love of food and wine and created their own gastronomic society, or txoko as it is called locally, in the area. They decided, to produce their own wines to enjoy with the local cuisines, specialising in Reserva and Gran Reserva style wines. The winery was integrated into the González Byass Family of Wine group in 1982 and began an expansion into international markets. Today Beronia is one of the most renowned Spanish wineries both in international and domestic markets, producing pure and traditional Rioja wines with their own personality and Beronia style.

Beronia Verdejo Rueda 2022

$40.00
Beronia Rueda Verdejo Blanco 2022 is the only wine made by Beronia Rueda, the González Byass group’s winery based in that Denominación located in the region of Castile. A unique single-varietal that’s the result of double harvesting and full fermentation in stainless steel and concrete vats. Elegant, fresh and mouth coating.   The white Beronia Rueda Verdejo 2022 was designed from grapes that were harvested in two stages: in the first, the earliest grapes that give the wine its freshness and a slight herby touch were picked; the second was focused on selecting the ripest and most concentrated berries to lend it volume. These are the ingredients that go into making Bodegas Beronia Rueda, the only wine produced by the González Byass group’s firm based in Rueda, a Denominación de Origen located in the region of Castile.  As in the three previous vintages, the grapes from the two harvests were processed separately and fermented in stainless and concrete vats. The final blend is a versatile, single-varietal Rueda wine that’s a perfect match both for exotic food such as Asian (sushi, for example) and for classic dishes like white fish, smoked fish and creamy cheeses. Try it.

Beronia Tempranillo Elaboración Especial 2021

$40.00
VINTAGE The significant feature of the weather over the growing the year was that both winter and spring were mild, which meant that budburst, flowering and fruit set were earlier than usual. Rainfall was in line with the average for winter, but there were storms in spring, some of them hail, albeit in very specific areas. Véraison happened in the first few days of August, which was a very hot month, signalling that the harvest would be about 15 days earlier than usual. The weather changed dramatically in early September, with daytime temperatures turning much milder and night-time temperatures becoming much cooler, creating a broad diurnal range - ideal for the grapes and their phenolic ripening to develop well. The outcome was satisfactory, with healthy grapes, nicely mature skins and sweet tannins. The harvest took place progressively and in order, starting on 20th September and finishing on 19th October. The crop was classified as VERY GOOD. WINEMAKING Tempranillo is the D.O. Ca. Rioja’s classic grape variety, the key to the identity of its red wines and one of the world’s great varieties. Only the best quality bunches were selected to make our Beronia Tempranillo Elaboración Especial. Alcoholic fermentation and the subsequent malolactic fermentation were carried out in 225 litre American oak barrels, where the wine continued to age for five months afterwards, with regular bâtonnage. Finally, the wine was bottled in June 2022 and held in bottle for at least 5 months prior to release. WINEMAKER’S NOTES The wine shows a crimson red colour. Sophisticated and attractive on the nose with prominent aromas typical of the Tempranillo grape: rose petals, red fruits and liquorice, accompanied by sweet spices such as cinnamon and vanilla, with light touches of mocha complementing the other aromas. A very fresh, varietal wine with prominent flavours of red fruits and chocolate and well-integrated tannins that make it easy to enjoy the many different flavours. SERVING AND PAIRING Store in a cool place (maximum 14ºC), away from direct light and unpleasant odours. Recommended for drinking from release until 2028.

Beronia Verdejo Rueda 2021

$40.00
VINTAGE Harvest started on the 19th of September and finished on the 30th – the grape quality this year was very good. We were hit by the Philomena storm at the beginning of the year which gave us temperatures below -15ºC for a number of weeks in the vineyard. Once spring arrived, rain during the budding season has led to an important reduction in production. The rains continued into the summer with rainfall reaching historical volumes in July. Summer was mild which meant that the vines matured well throughout September yielding fresh and balance wines with extraordinary aromatic qualities, which will only improve during the lees ageing. WINEMAKING The grapes are harvested mechanically at night so as to retain the freshness of the fruit and avoid oxidation. The fruit is pressed gently in an inert atmosphere to avoid the aromas becoming oxidised, with the must being separated into different quality grades. We then purify the must by decantation, separating out the clean must. Fermentation is carried out using selected yeasts, with the temperature kept under control at between 14 and 17ºC and goes on for 10-15 days. The winery has two types of fermentation tank, stainless steel and concrete, and both are used. The former offer total temperature control and speedy alcoholic fermentation, which produces wines that are clean, complex and intense on the nose. Concrete on the other hand promotes contact with the lees whilst the porosity of the material helps produce wines that are very full-bodied on the palate. After 2 to 3 months ageing on its lees with weekly remuage, the wine is clarified and filtered prior to creating the perfect blend and bottling. On another note, one of Beronia Rueda’s most significant points of difference is the winery’s capacity to store must and delay alcoholic fermentation for part of the crop until the following spring, meaning it can produce recently fermented wines brimming with freshness. WINEMAKER´S NOTES Beronia Rueda 2021 is bright and clean showing a pale yellow colour with green hints/rim. Intensily aromatic it displays notes of citrus and white fruit along with herbaceous aromas that are typical of the grape variety, such as fennel. Richly textured on the palate, it is fresh and elegant, with a slight touch of bitterness on the finish, also characteristic of the Verdejo grape. SERVING AND PAIRING An ideal accompaniment for all sorts of fish dishes, pasta, rice and cheese. This wine is suitable for vegans

Beronia Gran Reserva 2015

$69.00
VINTAGE
The weather during 2015 was marked by a cold, damp winter with plenty of rain and four snowfalls. The vines sprouted somewhat later than usual but the high spring temperatures meant they flowered ten days earlier than normal. The vines retained their head start right through to the harvest. Favourable weather throughout the growing cycle promoted excellent vine health. One of the most outstanding features of the 2015 harvest was that it took place almost simultaneously right across the DO Ca. Rioja Designation, starting in early September in the earliest eastern areas and ending in the first few days of October in the highest areas. WINEMAKING After the best grapes were carefully selected from the Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo vineyards, they were cold macerated for several days prior to fermentation. Alcoholic fermentation took place next, at between 26 and 28ºC, with periodic pumping over. The must was allowed to macerate again post-fermentation. Lastly, Beronia Gran Reserva 2015 spent 28 months in French oak barrels, completing its ageing with a further 36 months in bottle prior to release. WINEMAKER’S NOTES Beronia Gran Reserva 2015 is a very deep garnet colour. On the nose it displays a vast array of aromas, from stewed ripe fruit to prunes and nuts such as walnuts. Subtle hints of tobacco and powdered cacao also come through, together with white pepper and balsamic notes that add freshness. It delivers distinct notes of fruit and nuts on the palate, which provide structure and tannin. The wine is long, very complex, balanced and also sophisticated. SERVING AND PAIRING Best served at 15º-17ºC with red meat, roast beef, mature cheese and chocolate desserts. Recommended for drinking from release until 2034.
