Primus Carménère 2021

$52.00
Apalta - Colchagua Valley, Chile Produced by Alto de Casablanca, Primus 2021 is a full-bodied Chilean Carmenère fragrant with earthy florals, mixed dark berry and wild herb aromas, juicy with dark berry, violets, sage and thyme flavours with a spicy peppery finish. Nicely done. The Caménère vines for this wine are south facing along the Tinguiririca River. The grapes are handpicked with a double selection before macerating in open stainless-steel tanks with native yeasts. The skins remain after fermentation to give structure and soften its finish. The best blocks from the harvest are then selected and blended before aging in French oak barrels for 12 months. Nose: Aromas of red fruits, cedar and boldo herbs. Palate: It’s fresh and fruity in mouth with cherry flavors and a touch of pepper and rosemary. Silky with velvety tannins and good volume. Food Pairing: Beef empanadas, curried lamb, and stews. Recommended Serving Temperature: 16º C "A spicy carmenere with cherries, allspice and black olives. Juicy and lively with the medium-bodied palate wrapped by firm but fine tannins. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." - 92 points, James Suckling

The vineyard is perfectly adapted to the estate, located in the old terraces of the Tinguiririca River, where the Andes Mountains and Coastal Range untied in a half-moon formation that protects the 130 year old vines. Grapes are harvested at first light on the fruit carefully double sorted and destemmed. The fruit is then gravity fed into 5000L tanks, where they are fermented with native yeasts. The wine is then racked off to 225L French oak barrels, where the wine is aged for 14 months. After this period, the wine is finished in 3000L foudres for 6 months to achieve perfect integration. Complex aromas of raspberry and blackcurrent mix with notes of vanilla and subtle pepper, cedar and leather. The palate is fresh and elegant, with smooth tannins and a persistent finish. Certification: V-Label.EU (Vegan Certified) 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% Carménère "Impressive clarity of blackberries and licorice with cassia bark, wild herbs and leaves, as well as blackcurrants and purple berries. The palate has a sleek, powerful and focused style with such long, athletic yet fine tannins, driving the long, juicy finish. A blend of 55% cabernet sauvignon and 45% carmenere. The 2019 vintage defines a fine yet firm structure with soft but concentrated fruit. The wine releases many delicious, complementary flavours, from fleshy dark cherry and crushed strawberry to dense blackcurrant and ripe raspberry, then chilli pepper spice, creamy vanilla and gently toasted bread. A fine, intense, serious, age-worthy wine that’s accessible in its youth.
