Produced by Alto de Casablanca, Primus 2021 is a full-bodied Chilean Carmenère fragrant with earthy florals, mixed dark berry and wild herb aromas, juicy with dark berry, violets, sage and thyme flavours with a spicy peppery finish. Nicely done. The Caménère vines for this wine are south facing along the Tinguiririca River.
The grapes are handpicked with a double selection before macerating in open stainless-steel tanks with native yeasts. The skins remain after fermentation to give structure and soften its finish. The best blocks from the harvest are then selected and blended before aging in French oak barrels for 12 months.
Nose: Aromas of red fruits, cedar and boldo herbs.
Palate: It’s fresh and fruity in mouth with cherry flavors and a touch of pepper and rosemary. Silky with velvety tannins and good volume.
Food Pairing: Beef empanadas, curried lamb, and stews.
Recommended Serving Temperature: 16º C
“A spicy carmenere with cherries, allspice and black olives. Juicy and lively with the medium-bodied palate wrapped by firm but fine tannins. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.” – 92 points, James Suckling
Primus seeks to create a wine’s finest expression by using only the most outstanding grapes from our vineyards. Each of our renowned appellations have a distinct signature that allows us to produce wines of excellence.
Primus comes from handpicked grapes in organically farmed vineyards. Fermentation takes place exclusively in open tanks with native yeasts, maximizing each variety’s potential. This is complemented by aging in different containers — foudres and French oak barrels — which complete the wine’s evolution and transform our valleys’ best fruit into expressive wines with great elegance, balance and freshness. A perfect accompaniment to an array of gastronomic styles.
Our vineyards are located in renowned areas of Apalta, Colchagua Valley and Maipo Valley. We adhere to organic practices in all of our estates, which gives way to healthy soils, pure fruit and expressive wines.
The Apalta vineyards are located on old alluvial riverbeds of the Tinguiririca. It is a privileged location protected by nature, where the Andes and Coastal mountain ranges meet to form an impressive half-moon of mountains. A vineyard with history, whose pre-phylloxera vines from imported French roots continue to produce high-quality fruit year after year. The hundred-year-old vines have a deep root system, which requires minimal intervention. Both the volcanic granitic soils from the mountains and the silty soils from the river allow for natural drainage. These conditions, along with a semi-arid Mediterranean climate, result in mature grapes that produce balanced, elegant wines.
The Maipo Valley lies at the base of the Andes Mountains, south of Santiago where one of Chile’s most important rivers begins, hence the appellation’s name. Throughout history, the Maipo River has had three major floods, which formed three alluvial terraces similar to those of Bordeaux. The Primus vineyards are located on the third terrace, with alluvial soils, excellent drainage and moderate fertility. Though Cabernet Sauvignon is a very vigorous variety, these soil conditions restrain its growth. The rocky soils in contact with the roots also provide a certain minerality to the wine, expressing the Andes Mountains in each glass. These conditions allow for lengthy wines that are elegant and balanced with great concentration and smooth tannins.

Mornington Peninsula, Australia
Opening with stone fruit and floral aromas with bright citrus notes, this wine has layers of fruit flavour and creamy complexity derived from 11 months aging on lees in barrel.
Vintage 2016 was marked by warm and dry conditions and the Mornington Peninsula harvest was one of the earliest on record. It arrived in a hurry too and many vignerons were being picked in early February. The resulting wines have excellent flavour and weight and tend to be earlier drinking styles.
Margaret River, Australia
This is a complex wine with aromas of black berry fruits, chocolate, and cedar with berry highlights. On the palate it has layers of interest starting with rich dark berry fruit flavours, deft oak treatment, and plush tannins. It is ready to drink and will age beautifully over the long term.
This fruit was hand harvested in late March in a selection of our vineyards; the majority was from the Wilyabrup sub-region and there was a parcel from Carbunup. The wine was aged in French oak barriques, 30 per cent new, for 15 months.
Dark garnet with a lucid rim, the wine exhibits aromas of briar fruit, ripe blackberry and dark plum with a tinge of minerality and charred meat. Brawny on the entry, it has an equally big mid-palate with complex flavours of ripe brambly fruit, a touch of earth and notes of espresso bean. Still massive through to the finish with soft drying tannins, the unique varietal characteristics of the blend clearly reveal themselves over time.
Varietal : 56% Zinfandel, 34% Petite Sirah, 10% Syrah
WINEMARKER’S NOTES
The blend exhibits darker aromatics of blueberry, raspberry, black pepper, vanilla crème and a slight funk. The entry is refined yet immense with flavors of redcurrant, cherry tart and traces of spice that follow through to the mid-palate. The backbone of acidity and a lengthy finish sets up the wine to age for many years.
Varietal: 100% Pinot Noir
Alcohol: 14.1%
Maturation: Aged 10 months in French Oak, 60% New
The pebble-rich and limestone soils of Volnay, rising between 230 and 280 meters above sea level, makes for a delicate, aromatic, and elegant Pinot Noir revealing the feminine profile of the appellation. Cultivated since the Middle Ages, the vineyard located on the steep slopes of the hill of Chaignot has always been a perfect fit for Burgundy’s native red grape variety.
With a delicate nose of peonies, strawberries, raspberries and cherries, our Volnay 2017 shows a feminine profile. The palate reveals notes of pomegranate and sweet spices, such as vanilla and cinnamon, as well as silky and smooth tannins. With pronounced intensity and long finish, it is a Pinot Noir made for aging, that will evolve beautifully.
Recommended Serving Temperature: 16°C
Ornellaia is a cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc & Petit Verdot and the faithful expression of unique terroir developed in harmony with nature. 2016 represents another immensely successful vintage highlighting all the virtues of Bolgheri’s climate: abundant sunshine, without excessive heat, a dry summer to allow the grapes to achieve perfect ripeness and concentration, and just about enough rain to avoid stress. All these elements combine to yield a wine that shows lush ripeness and crisp firmness, opposing forces creating a sense of dense raciness we like to describe as “tension”.
Particularly dark and young colour is the prelude to a complex nose of black berries, spices and cedar. The palate is rich and dense, balanced by a refined and firm tannic structure, lifted by a juicy and bright acidity. 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot

The vines, which are at least 25 years old, were planted near the Grand Cru Mambourg above the Clarisses monastery in Sigolsheim. The yields here are only 26 hl/ha.
Ruby red color, beautiful shine. The nose is discreet with a floral touch as well as notes of mara strawberries. In the mouth, a precision, a depth, a radiance that makes you want to repeat endlessly. Beautiful body hold, this racy wine reveals superb liveliness. A touch on the palate with notes of velvet. It has a rigor and a solar tone which underline its raw material and allow this Pinot Noir to give a very gastronomic dimension.
Food Pairing: Veal, Game, Poultry, Mushroom
"Stunning blackberry and black-cherry nose with notes of orange zest and cinnamon. Such a graceful wine, the power and concentration below the waterline at the front and on the mid-palate, until they sweep you away at the diamond-bright finish. So much energy and vitality that it's dangerous! From a site just below the Grand Cru Furstentum. 65% whole cluster. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold." - 98 points, James Suckling
Viognier is the only varietal grown in Condrieu, and makes smooth, generous wines. These are a pale, golden colour with a glimmer of green, and are both fresh and highly aromatic. Scents include floral perfumes, particularly violets, and fruity notes of mango, white peach and apricot. At their peak, there is also a discernible touch of musk, gingerbread and tobacco.
