For many years, we’ve used both Grenache and Syrah, in multiple combinations, to create our China Doll blends. This year, we decided to go headfirst to the top of Atlas Peak and select special blocks of Syrah from Stagecoach Vineyard to be the backbone of the 2022 vintage. Inspired by the many years of China Doll, this vintage continues the hallmark of pairing our label with a crisp rosé—perfect for a hot day. Fermented and aged in stainless steel.

A slow rush of the 2022 China Doll pours a deep salmon core and a soft touch of neon purple, while bright aromatics of wild strawberry, hibiscus, and cream originate from the glass. Arriving on the palate, freshness and juicy come to mind – white peach, apricot and other ripe stone fruit plus hints of pomegranate and a succinct minerality. Energy keeps flowing through the finish with notes of pink guava and Pink Lady apple, pleasantly closing the wine.

About brand
The history of Orin Swift Cellars dates back to 1995 when on a lark, David Swift Phinney took a friend up on an offer and went to Florence, Italy to spend a semester “studying”. During that time, he was introduced to wine, how it was made, and got hooked. A few more years of university led to graduation and eventually a job at Robert Mondavi Winery in 1997 as a temporary harvest worker.
Deciding that if he was going to work this hard, it would eventually have to be for himself, so in 1998 he founded Orin Swift Cellars; Orin is his father’s middle name and Swift is his mother’s maiden name. With two tons of zinfandel and not much else, he spent the next decade making wine for others as well as himself and grew the company to what it is today.

Dark garnet with a lucid rim, the wine exhibits aromas of briar fruit, ripe blackberry and dark plum with a tinge of minerality and charred meat. Orin Swift Machete 2018
A gothic mauve with a vivid neon rim, the wine appears almost black in the glass. Notes of wet stone, black plum and crushed gravel reverberate from within. Bold upfront, the palate is all-enveloping with mixed berry crepe, black licorice and a touch of char. Layered and omnipotent in weight, the wine finishes with ripe Petite Sirah tannins, providing a pleasant closing texture.

Orin Swift Blank Stare 2019
A glowing pale straw with a striking touch of chartreuse sits in the glass. Aromatically, the wine pops with lime zest, gooseberries, ripe passionfruit, fresh cut grass and lemon bars. On the entry, the acidity acts like a belt, constraining the voluptuousness; similar taste profiles to the nose plus crispy green apples and the faintest hint of fresh sage abound. The finish is reminiscent of ripe kiwi and limoncello, teetering on a beam of lingering acidity.

Crisp crimson in the glass.
Nose: The 2021 Slander opens with notes of wild strawberry, pomegranate, Bing cherry and cedar. Secondary aromatics abound, with hints of redwood grove underbrush, white pepper and earth.
Palate: Delicate on entry, the palate is flooding with red plum, cherry cola, rhubarb and spices. A touch of cocoa powder on the finish, the wine closes with confident acidity and length.

Orin Swift Abstract 2021
Nose: An opaque purple core with a glowing mauve rim, the 2021 Abstract brings forth opening aromas of muddled blue and blackberries with a frame of dark chocolate brownie and seasoned leather.

Orin Swift 8 Years In The Desert 2020
Bright violet in the glass, the 2020 8 Years in the Desert is the epitome of our style, the reason we are even here in the first place.
Nose: As it’s being poured, the aromatics hit squarely on the nose with a perception of sweetness: pure brambly raspberry juice and blueberry preserves with a hint of white pepper and High Sierra forest floor. Yet, the perceived sweetness on the nose is just that, perceived, and doesn’t carry through to the palate.
Palate: Lush and enveloping with a beam of acidity, notes of blackberry pie, plum and kirsch flourish. Ultra-round tannins and lingering raspberry, the wine finishes in slow-motion.

Ripe golden apple, concentrated jasmine, citrus notes and a touch of cream and fresh brioche emerge. Orin Swift Mercury Head 2021
An almost-black, opaque garnet core sits in the glass with slow-moving tears falling down the sides. Immediate aromatic notes of ripe cassis, charred ribeye, sandalwood and freshly cut oak pilfer — breathe deeper for more. The first sip is a complex, layered conundrum of blackberry, black plum, fennel, licorice and dark chocolate. The dark crimson core and brick rim sets the stage, as aromas of currant, blackberry, blue fruits, anise, lavender and brioche float from the glass. Enveloping and coating becomes mixed berry pie, sarsaparilla, cola and blackcurrant with structured heft through the mid-palate. Waipara West Pinot Noir 2018
Estate grown on 3 blocks with differing soil structure, wind exposure and clones – early 1980’s selections from St Helena and more recent Dijon clones. The colour is an attractive, very bright ruby garnet with distinct crimson hues at the rim. Aromatically it is as striking as it is seductive. Bright red fruits - raspberry, strawberry and Morello cherry have immediate impact with an equally impressive array of oriental spices - anise and clove. Ripe seed aromas of almond kernel and cherry stone lift the nose. Kura Rum Cask Malt Whisky is a blended malt whisky made with malted barley, yeast, and water. It is rested minimum three years in American Oak barrels. Being originally a Japanese Rum producer, Helios Co. has second aged the precious whisky in their own local Japanese Rum barrels to attain a perfectly balanced whisky with hints of tropical fruits, vanilla a seaweed. The blend consists of varying malt whiskies that are aged up to 18 years, while the youngest whisky in the blend is three years.
